JHA Incarcerated Population Survey Sample: JHA collected 12,780 surveys from people housed in 21 of IDOC’s 29 prisons between April 2018 and May 2019. This sample represents 42.2% of all people held within the 21 prisons where JHA collected surveys, and approximately 33.6% of IDOC’s overall average daily prison population in 2019. A listing of the prisons in which surveys were collected may be viewed by clicking on the ‘Prison’ filter box below. No surveys were collected at an IDOC work camp, boot camp, or Adult Transition Center, nor were such facilities counted amongst the IDOC prisons as they are atypical carceral settings. Note that totals of the graphs may not add up to 100% because of “no reply” values in the dataset. “No reply” values are the result of incarcerated people being instructed to skip questions that did not apply to them and/or that they did not want to answer.

To view detailed results by prison, you may also access this information through our report filter. Select ‘Survey” in the menu on the left hand side of the screen to access a listing of all prisons JHA has collected surveys at, including prisons prior to April 2018. Surveys collected from incarcerated people before April 2018 were not included in the dashboard below as the survey was different.
